Our Adult Literacy Hub in Shabele has filled up with students and we have to ask people to wait until we can hire more staff. Many adults in the area where we work were never offered the opportunity to learn how to read and write, and they can see how this skill will open doors for them.

For a Literacy Hub we hire two teachers and an outreach worker. They run a two year, part time program for up to 150 adults. We are beginning the process of hiring staff for another Literacy Hub, which we hope to have up and running in a couple of months.

We would love to have several more Literacy Hubs, as there is such a hunger for learning in the area where we work, but in order to be fair to our students and staff, we will only create a Hub if we have funding to cover its expenses for the full two years. At current prices and salaries, we can open another Literacy Hub for $5000 Canadian.
