We are a volunteer organization that is run from Canada by a Board of Directors from the education and social services sector. The only paid staff members for Education 4 Change are those who are working in Ethiopia. We are a not-for-profit corporation with charitable status in Canada. Our largest cost is the salaries of our staff working in Ethiopia with the remainder being used to support the purchasing of resources and improving our offerings within the communities.
A Community with books
The Kelafo area of Ethiopia has a population of approximately 200,000 people and yet they had never had a single library. But that all changed on August 1st, 2018 when Hope Library had its Grand Opening!
Reaching 624 students from 6 villages
When women are literate they are able to support their children in being literate, become entrepreneurs and make change for their families. The power of literacy is that it can change lives for more than one person.
Supporting 78 teachers be better teachers
We have been funding a full-time mobile teacher since 2009. He is a qualified teacher and former principal who uses a donkey and cart to travel between 5 villages in the area.
Training teachers to train other teachers will make us sustainable.
The sessions use a “train the trainer” model so that the teachers who attend the conference will then be able to transfer their knowledge to others once returning home. This is a partner project with ELI
Girls can’t go to school if they don’t have bathrooms.
Some of our schools started as a table under a mango tree, help us keep improving them. Washrooms, wells and teacher workspaces are high on the list of improvements needed right now.
Help us buy kits for schools to use to teach science
Science is an area of need throughout the Somali region, not just in Kelafo. The Ethiopian Ministry of Education reported that only 10 of 196 high schools in the Somali region have working science labs.
